Denim Day 2023
Posted: February 28, 2022
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and New Horizons Shelter and Outreach Centers, Inc. is joining organizations across the country in celebrating survivors, honoring victims, and engaging our communities in building awareness and recognition of the crimes that have such a huge impact upon our communities. For the fifth year, New Horizons is excited to involve community members, businesses and organizations through Denim Day!
Denim Day started due to a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court where a rape conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped her rapist remove her jeans, thereby implying consent.
This day of activism and empowerment raises funds for scholarships in both La Crosse and Trempealeau Counties, giving students opportunities to receive financial assistance for their futures while they engage in prevention education about sexual assault in their own community.
To raise funds for these scholarships, we ask community members, elected officials, businesses, and students to make a social statement with their fashion by wearing jeans on April 27th! This is a visible way to support survivors and oppose the misconceptions that surround sexual assault and victim blaming. Participating organizations will receive stickers from New Horizons for employees to wear when they donate $1 to the scholarship fund.
Denim Day is a great way to bring awareness to and start conversations about the effects of sexual assault in our community. We are looking now for area businesses to participate this April. Organizations interested in participating can fill out the form below or contact our Director of Programming and Personnel, Heidi, at 608-791-2610 ext. 1306 or to get involved!
