YOUTH & FAMILY ADVOCACY

Children and youth who live in a home where abusive relationships occur often experience the trauma of that abuse, even if it is not directed at them. Understanding the profound impact this can have; our Youth and Family Advocacy Program is dedicated to supporting families both within our shelter and in the wider community.

SERVICES OFFERED:

  • ‍‍Individual Support: Our youth and family advocate works closely with families to address their unique needs, ensuring that each child receives the care and attention they deserve.

  • ‍‍Children's Support Groups: We offer support groups specifically designed for children and youth. These groups provide a safe space for them to express their feelings, share experiences, and build resilience alongside peers who understand their struggles.

  • ‍‍Parenting Skills Training: Non-offending parents can participate in training programs that focus on effective parenting skills. This training helps them provide a stable and nurturing environment for their children, equipping them with tools to cope with the challenges they face.

  • ‍‍Community Resources: Our youth and family advocate connects families with community resources and services that can further assist in their healing journey, ensuring they have access to comprehensive support.

WHY IT MATTERS

Children exposed to domestic violence may experience many emotional and psychological challenges. By providing specialized advocacy and support, we aim to mitigate these effects and empower families to rebuild their lives. Our program not only supports the immediate needs of children and parents but also fosters long-term healing and resilience.

DV-SAFE Housing Program.

New Horizons’ DV SAFE (Survivor-Affordable-Flexible-Empowering) Housing Program quickly ends survivor homelessness by helping them find and move into a home in their community. Our model links rental assistance and other housing supports with domestic violence case management. Once back in housing, survivors are in a better position to address other challenges that may have contributed to their homelessness.

COMPONENTS

  • Housing Identification: Participants are assisted in locating a unit of their choice in the community that meets program eligibility requirements. Housing Advocates are active in this process and assist participants with contacting landlords and understanding their leases.

  • Financial Assistance: The first year's rent for the unit is subsidized by the program and is paid directly to the Landlord. The program participant is the leaseholder and the sole tenant for the dwelling unit. NewHorizons enters into Rental Assistance Agreements with Landlords to provide one year of rental assistance and security deposit to participants and their authorized family members.

  • Case Management and Supportive Services: New Horizons provides individuals and families in the DV SAFE Housing Program with appropriate and time-limited services and supports to allow them to stabilize quickly in permanent housing. The Housing Advocate monitors participants’ housing stability and is available to support healing from the abuse they endured.
