Denim Day Scholarship Winners

We are proud to announce the winners of this year’s Denim Day Scholarship Essay Contest, open to high school seniors across our service area. As part of their submissions, students were asked to reflect on individuals or groups who have played a revolutionary role in the movement to end sexual violence – exploring how their efforts have shaped policy, influenced laws, and created a lasting impact.

1st Place – Keelee Baca of La Crosse

Keelee will receive a $1,000 scholarship for her powerful essay honoring the legacy of Tarana Burke, founder of the #MeToo movement and a tireless advocate for survivors.

2nd Place – Theresa Najara of Independence

Theresa will receive a $500 scholarship for her thoughtful reflection on victim blaming and the cultural shifts needed to create a safer world for all.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Keelee and Theresa and thank all students who submitted essays. Your voices are powerful, and your commitment to ending sexual violence is inspiring.

Coming Up…DVAM!

Every October, New Horizons joins organizations nationwide in recognizing Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) – a time to honor survivors, raise awareness, and take collective action to end domestic violence in our communities.

DVAM began in October 1987, alongside the launch of the National Domestic Violence Hotline. It originated from the “Day of Unity,” created by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence to bring advocates together in solidarity. What started as a single day has grown into a powerful, month-long movement to amplify survivor voices, educate the public, and push for systems that uphold safety, equity, and justice for all.

Although summer is just rolling in and October might feel moons away, we’re already in full planning mode for the exciting things ahead for DVAM! Click HERE to learn more.
